Road layout changes on State Highway 1 near Johnstones Hill Tunnels

Work is beginning on an integral and important piece of work within the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi
to Warkworth Motorway Project requiring significant road layout changes north of the
Johnstones Hill Tunnels.
What is happening at the Southern Connection?
The Southern Connection works involve a four-stage construction sequence to connect State
Highway 1 (SH1) north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnels to the new motorway. The works will
enable the widening of SH1 north of the tunnels where it will eventually connect to the
section of new motorway still under construction.
Stage 2 requires SH1 southbound traffic north of the tunnel, to be temporarily transferred to
the existing northbound lane (refer map below). This will ensure the safety of our workers
undertaking these critical works and commuters using the existing roading network, whilst
limiting disruption to traffic flows, as far as practicable.
When and where will we be doing this work?
For the past couple of years, we’ve been building the new alignment alongside SH1. Now
we’re working to bring the two together. The new road layout on SH1, north of the
Johnstones Hill Tunnels will be in place from 10 November 2020 until late May 2021.
The road layout changes will be formed over a period of two nights on 8-9 November 2020
from 8:00pm – 4:00am. Stop/go traffic management will be in place to enable this to happen
Safety is our highest priority and the reduced speed limit of 60km/h will remain in place for
the duration of the works. While we will try to limit disruption to traffic flows, road users
should plan ahead and allow more time for their journey.
What does this mean for you?
We ask that drivers keep to the temporary speed limit for the safety of our work crews and
road users, drive to the conditions and don’t be distracted by work activity. Motorists may
experience longer travel times during this time. We advise planning ahead by allowing
extra travel time especially during the weekend and public holidays.

Thank you for your patience and support while we complete this important work. To help
plan for peak time travel, visit the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency journey planner at Alternative routes are available via Hibiscus Coast Highway and
State Highway 16.
Please don’t hesitate to contact our communications team via email:
or our 24/7 freephone: 0508 P2WK INFO (0508 7295 4636) if you have any questions.
More information on the Southern Connection work can be found by visiting our website and our Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth Facebook page.

Great Opportunity: Be A Sponsor for the Defining Puhoi Event!

What a peculiar year 2020 has been thus far, with the recent change of ownership at the pub and drop of levels we are putting together our ‘Annual Wood Chopping Carnival’, on the bottom lawn at the Puhoi Pub on Saturday 9th January 2021 . Bernie and Gary, former owners of Northridge Country lodge, in Silverdale are the new owners of the pub, with their three daughters and one son all involved with running the pub, making the pub another family run business.

We are in our 16th year of holding this event at our establishment and with huge help from the Puhoi Axemen Club and of course sponsors, we have all made it possible for the general public, overseas visitors and media who otherwise may not know how entertaining and important this sport event is to our area.

The aim for 2021 is to make it more exciting and beneficial to the viewers, be prepared for the ‘boys from Naki’, pitching their best against ‘Team Puhoi’.

Most of our sponsors give a monetary donation, from $100 upwards, while others give product promoting their business. These are divided into prizes of (product and/or prize money) for each chop. Each chop consists of four place getters across 22 events.

Sponsor Tiers

Tier 1 – $500 cash donation

Tier 2 – $300 cash donation

Tier 3 – $200 cash donation

All sponsors can have their business signage/advertising banners displayed on the day, present the prize for their chop as well as attend our sponsors dinner to be held from 630pm.

If you are interested in being part of this unique event, please contact us by email noting which tier or in what other capacity you would like to  be involved, we will then provide all the details.

To Note;

·       Should we move up levels and need to cancel our event, we will provide full refunds on donations and product.

·       We may follow this up with a phone call early next week.

Thank you for your support.

Jared – Puhoi Fire brigade – Senior Fire Fighter Puhoi

Fire call outs over COVID very quiet not too many call out, motor vehicle. chimney and roof cavity. Nothing significant. Very good from fire crew point of view.

Noticing as returning to normal life more people travelling causing increase in traffic incidents – tiredness etc.

Fire season – Potential Drought situation. Puhoi is in many ways better off that other areas as we are used to conserving our water having our own household supplies. Drier than normal winter so rainfall

Community needs to be aware of conserving the water for themselves, Keeping in mind how the fire brigade would access your water source at home, to put out fires, while they have a small tanker and sources they would still need to access the home supply and small tank first.

Jared has done presentation at local markets etc. regarding fire safety and fire seasons / requirements etc. The fire brigade is happy to help in the community answer questions, provide support.

Ways you can help the brigade keep your property fire safe (available on PDF and the Check its alright Website)

  • Cleaning gutters so that waterflow into tank is not restricted
  • Create a boundary around your house – keeping debris and vegetation low around the house, less chance of your house catching fire. Easier for the brigade to access and protect your house.
  • Is your driveway clear enough for the trucks to get down onto your property?
  • Can they turn around when down your driveway?
  • Fire brigade is happy to come and do an assessment of your property if you have any concerns. (contact – Jared – 021 723 428 or at the station leave a note they train on Monday nights
  • – great place to check the conditions and rules about lighting fires in local area.

Do you have a large water source on your property that the fire brigade can access water for use in fires?

Action: Paul will look at the area in question and assess what is needed to be done.

Puhoi Heritage Museum – Jenny Schollum / Sheryl Titford

Is still looking for a permanent home for the museum. They need a space with good foot traffic.

Forum is happy to help the museum find options.

Civil Defence & Neighbourhood support – Judith Williams

Judith had earlier wanted to have a debrief for people to share their experiences over COVID but with the recurring situation, she has decided to not continue to pursue.

Judith feels that the feeling in the community is not as buoyant as it was earlier in the year, she feels that local social gatherings help to lift the spirits and provide opportunity for people to meet and help each other.

Attended the recent meeting AGM Rodney neighbourhood support (August). Dr Martin Hadler was a guest speaker – Red Beach Urgent Care. (Potential to approach him regarding talking to a group in Puhoi at quarterly event)

CARRE are holding a day in the beginning of October that Judith will attend. Radio-training, plans for potential water shortages.

Justin pointed out that in Puhoi our first emergency response people is the Puhoi Fire Station.

J Tolophf group – Greg Taylor

Repairs and Maintenance have been done on J Tolopf road.

Stage 1 of Ahuroa Road to be sealed by end of 2020 but, as of yet, no confirmation from AT on funding or start date for stage two but we are told it will happen.

14 October Tolopf road hosted by forest bridge trust. Hope is to talk about weed and pest control on their properties.

Puhoi Library – Sandra Beagley

The library is still closed, with the plan to reopen when Auckland returns to Level 1
